Why Shot Blasting Matters

What is Shot Blasting?
Shot blasting is a controlled mechanical process that propels abrasive media onto a metal surface at high velocity. The impact removes rust, mill scale, oxidation, heat tint, previous coatings, weld contamination, surface imperfections and manufacturing residues.
At the same time, the process creates a controlled surface roughness, commonly known as an anchor profile, allowing subsequent coatings to achieve a strong mechanical bond with the steel. Unlike wire brushing or chemical cleaning, shot blasting simultaneously cleans and profiles the surface, making it the preferred preparation method for many industrial coating systems.
Surface Cleanliness Standards
Where customer specifications require recognised preparation standards, TMF prepares components in accordance with internationally recognised guidance such as ISO 8501-1, which classifies the visual cleanliness of blast-cleaned steel surfaces.
- Sa 2 — Thorough Blast Cleaning: removal of most visible rust, mill scale and previous coatings, leaving only slight staining
- Sa 2½ — Very Thorough Blast Cleaning: the most commonly specified preparation standard for industrial protective coatings, substantially free from visible contamination
- Sa 3 — Blast Cleaning to Visually Clean Steel: the highest visual cleanliness classification, producing a uniform metallic appearance
Surface Profile (Anchor Pattern)
Creating the correct anchor profile is just as important as achieving surface cleanliness. Abrasive blasting produces microscopic peaks and valleys that allow coatings to mechanically lock onto the substrate.
The optimum profile depends on the coating type, dry film thickness, service environment, steel grade and customer specification. Too little profile may reduce adhesion; too much profile may increase coating consumption, affect appearance and reduce coating performance. TMF prepares every component to achieve the appropriate profile for its intended coating system.
Abrasive Media Selection
Different projects require different blasting media. Media selection influences cleaning efficiency, surface profile, surface roughness, coating adhesion, production speed and final appearance.
Selection is based on material type, component geometry, existing contamination, surface condition, required finish and the subsequent coating process. Correct media selection ensures effective cleaning while protecting the integrity of the component.
